Melde's Apparatus

A stretched string is attached to a tuning fork. When this fork vibrates, standing wave are formed on the string. This is clearly visible as well defined loops. The frequency (\(v\)) of the vibrations is given by -

  1. Transverse arrangement: $$v = \frac{1}{2l}\sqrt{\frac{T}{\mu}}$$
  2. Longitudinal arrangement: $$v = \frac{1}{l} \sqrt{\frac{T}{\mu}}$$

Where,

\(l\) - Length of each loop,

\(T\) - Tension applied,

\(\mu\) -Mass per unit length of string,

\(v\) - Frequency of tuning fork
