Spring Constant Measurement

  1. What happens when a spring-mass system is attached to a pendulum and not a hook?
  2. What happens when the system is completely dipped in a liquid, say, water?
  3. A block of mass m is suspended from the ceiling of a stationary standing elevator through a spring of spring constant k. Suddenly the cable breaks and the elevator starts falling freely. Show that the block now executes a simple harmonic motion in the elevator. Find the amplitude.
  4. A particle is subjected to two simple harmonic motions in the same direction having equal amplitudes and equal frequency. If the resultant amplitude is equal to the amplitude of the individual motions, what is the phase difference between the individual motions?
