Free Fall – Measurement of g

Three physical quantities need to be measured in this experiment – Mass, Length and time (period). Make the following table –
Table II : The details of the physical quantities to be measured.

To verify that a∝ F
  1. Put the freefall apparatus on a flat surface.
  2. Fix the object holder close to the top end.
  3. Fix the timers at two different positions.
  4. Pass a thread from the holder and through the timers. Adjust the holder and the timer to see that thread passes through the timers in such a way that it obstructs the light falling on the detector. (Timer has a light source on one arm and a detector on the other. It can note the timings when the light is blocked.)
  5. Settings on the timer :
  6. Measure the position of the holder and the timers.
  7. Put the steel ball to the magnetic holder. When the button the controller is pressed, the ball is released.
  8. Note down the times shown in both the timers.
  9. Repeat the measurements at different positions of the timer2, while keeping the first one fixed.
  10. Record the data in the Recording Data Section.
