My group at the University of Hyderabad, India, has been exploiting ultrafast laser spectroscopic techniques for detecting hazardous materials (including explosives), as well as the basic understanding of the processes involved, to optimize them for trace detection and remote/standoff sensing for real-world applications. Work Experience

Research achievements

    • We have successfully developed novel, versatile, low-cost surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates based on Ag, Au, Cu, Ag-Au, Si-Ag, and Si-Au nanoparticles/nanostructures achieved using femtosecond/picosecond laser ablation techniques for the detection of trace explosives – ppb/ppt levels of RDX, TNT, AN, picric acid, Fox-7, DNT, Tetryl, CL-20, etc. – and explosive mixtures in conjunction with a portable Raman spectrometer for on-field applications. His group has developed low-cost paper and cloth-based SERS substrates that have demonstrated excellent performance in the detection of nanogram-level picric acid, DNT, NTO, RDX, and DMMP. These are now being translated to devices for in-field detection of other hazardous materials.
    • We have also exploited the laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) technique to study the plasma dynamics of various explosive molecules and developed simple methodologies to discriminate common explosives based on the femtosecond/nanosecond LIBS data. His group has recently demonstrated 6.5-m standoff detection of bulk explosives such as nitroimidazoles, Nitropyrazoles, RDX, and HMX, using the femtosecond filament-induced breakdown spectroscopy (fs-FIBS) technique. They have also combined nanoparticle-enhanced LIBS (NELIBS) with the fs-FIBS technique for the trace detection of a secondary explosive, CL-20, in the standoff mode. Our group has developed machine learning-based algorithms for improving the signal-to-noise ratio in the LIBS data that will find utility in standoff detection of trace hazardous materials.
    • We have developed the femtosecond/picosecond laser ablation in liquids technique, wherein we achieved novel and robust nanoparticles and nanostructures of various materials such as high entropy alloys, HfO2, GaAs, SiC, Ge, etc. My works have been highlighted in the Year in Optics–2019 by the Optics & Photonics News (2019), Laser Focus World (2017), and SPIE newsletter (2016).
    • During the past decade, with a special grant from the government of India, he has developed world-standard ultrafast/NLO/spectroscopy laboratories in India, which is highly commendable. These facilities are also being used by several other research groups, including several IITs, IISERs, and universities within India. He has also developed intricate pump-probe and DFWM/CARS experiments using near-infrared fs pulses. This enabled him to elucidate the ps/fs excited-state lifetimes of novel phthalocyanines, porphyrins, corroles, porphycenes, and Sapphyrins, finding applications in solar cells and all-optical switching. In the case of energetic molecules, they could explicate the ps/fs vibrational dynamics, leading to an understanding of detonation mechanisms. We have also investigated third-order NLO properties of several organic/inorganic materials and their nanostructures/nanocomposites with ns, ps, and fs pulses for their applications in Q-switching, sensing, and bio-imaging of tissues. We achieved one of the largest two-photon, three-photon, and four-photon absorption coefficients/cross-sections in novel phthalocyanines, zero-dimensional perovskites, finding applications in optical power limiting and multi-photon microscopy/imaging applications.
    • For the first time, our research group (in collaboration with SEST, UoH) demonstrated the preparation of few-layer graphene (FLG) by femtosecond ablation of graphite powder – a patent was granted recently. The nanocomposites prepared using FLG have withstood 10000 C. This has implications for defense applications in missile canister technology.
