Our work focuses on the growth, characterization and applications of thin films. Research  interests include finite size effects on the optical response of thin films and the use of spectral transmission as a simple but powerful non-destructive probe to correlate structure, microstructure, band structure and the optical response of thin films. A number of of non-lithographic techniques for the fabrication of nanoparticle arrays and nanowires in thin films have been developed by our group. Innovations include self-catalysis based growth of nanowires and template, electric field and laser assisted approaches for the realization of nanostructures.  Multi-functionality in  thin film materials has been an abiding interest that  has led to a new class of nanocomposites based on metal silicide-Si films and non-stoichiometric titanium nitride films with unique optical, opto-electronic, mechanical and decorative properties. The work on non-stoichiometric Titanium nitrides was awarded an international patent in 2009. An important contribution, in collaboration with Prof. V.Srinivasan, has been to propose a universal definition  and experimental criterion for the onset of the bulk-to-nano phase transition.
